Demonic Death Judge - The Descent (2011)

This Finnish 4-piece left quite an impression with their debut EP in 2010. DDJ returns with 'The Descent', an hour long journey into the filthy psychedelic swamps of stoner/ sludge. This is a band filled with surprises and a sound that goes above the usual standards of the genre. Imagine the chainsaw guitars of early 90's death metal (Entombed, Dismember) played with the slow, fierce hatred of sludge (Iron Monkey, Eyehategod) into a sea of gloomy 70's psychedelica. It may sound weird, but it definitely works on here. I absolutely love this kind of "experimental" sound that goes in all directions while staying surprisingly familiar. Demonic Death Judge crafted something unique & refreshing here. Grab it, buy it & give it a few spins!

The Devil's Blood - The Thousandfold Epicentre (2011)

This one was 'on hold' for quite some time. With the sea of new releases this year it's hard to keep track of all the fantastic music that's coming our way... So here we have 'The Thousandfold Epicentre', the second full-length from The Devil's Blood

There are lots of praising reviews out there, and when I mostly agree on the fact that this is a lengthy, epic work of weird psychedelica & occult 70's worshipping rock. The Thousandfold Epicentre is quite a mountain to climb with it's 1,2 hour length & more experimental take on the overall sound. An album that shows progression like no other while staying true to the old school sound. But when taking a dose of this unholy Dutch ritual I still prefer the band's EP & debut. That being said, a matter of personal taste really, this is a damn good album that comes highly recommended (I absolutely love the opener & the title track). Ufesas - Ufesas (2011)

Groovy, laid back jams from Uruguay. This band creates a unique sound, influenced by many old & new artists. Something like The Stooges meets Wooden Shjips at a Hawkwind concert with a mix of Five Horse Johnson & Nebula. Just naming a few off the top of my head.. This is the kind of album that cries for another spin to discover more. Bluesy, sexy jams that are dangerously addictive...

The Heavy Eyes - The Heavy Eyes (2011)

The Heavy Eyes just finished their debut full-length, and guess what? It's fantastic. I recently got hooked to their amazing promo EP from a while ago (view the original post here). On their full-length you get all those wonderful tracks and more. This has to be one of the best kept secrets in the Bandcamp underground. Their sound instantly reminds me of the first time listening to bands like Nebula & Clutch, where the label 'stoner rock' meant more than just a couple of stoned, groovy hot riffs. It's the 70's all over again with a fresh, bluesy & ass-kickin' sound. The Heavy Eyes will guarantee it...

Sigiriya - Return To Earth (2011)

Here's one I completely missed, Sigiriya's 'Return To Earth';

'Do you remember the British band Acrimony? This band from Swansea in Wales was one of the flag bearers of the British stoner/doom scene in the 90s. Next to several EP’s and splits they recorded two albums. ‘Hymns From The Stone’ and ‘Tumuli Shroomaroom’. In 2001 they quit and members of the band ended up in other bands such as Iron Monkey and The Dukes Of Nothing. Four out of five Acrimony members found each other again in 2009 and started the band Sigiriya of which the debut ‘Return To Earth’ has been unleashed upon this world. Sound wise there is a resemblance to Acrimony, especially when it comes to the vocals of Dorian Walters. All songs sound great and are based on heavy riffs. What was started in Birmingham by Black Sabbath is professionally continued in Swansea' -Lords Of Metal

Samsara Blues Experiment - Revelation & Mystery (2011)

Lots of incredible releases this year. I'm just getting (absolutely) addicted to the latest jams of Elder & Tia Carrera (which I'll post later), and then this beast comes out of nowhere! Revelation & Mystery, just look at that cover art..

Samsara Blues Experiment is one of those bands who can instantly make my day. These fine German guys play stunning jams influenced by all the pages of the 70's/ stoner/ doom/ psychedelic/ space catalogue. They have a highly interesting & dynamic approach to the genres we all adore, and transform it into their own distinctive formula. A groovy, trippy mix of jammin' stoner psychedelica. They did it again with this record: and it's alot grittier & straightforward this time. Any fan of kick-ass rock with a psychedelic touch should give this one a try. Top 10 material right here.. Doomraiser - Mountains Of Madness (2011)

Italy's Doomraiser returns with 'Mountains Of Madness'... Another solid release from this rising band in the genre. Listen to their previous album here.

'The level of crippling doom has been cut back ever so slightly, there is nothing on this release to compare with 'Another Black Day' from the exceptionally classic 'Erasing the Remembrance' album and this leads me to my next point. Rather than simply copying the style and vibe of that album, they have progressed and created an album with its own unique feel, sound textures and atmosphere but don't worry doom-heads, this is still very much a doom-metal album.
The more varied approach on 'Mountains Of Madness' gives the album a certain mystique that 'Erasing the Remembrance' didn't have, there is something in these occult-driven grooves that makes this their most original album to date. There is only 5 songs spread out over 46 very enigmatic minutes and it is without a doubt some of best music I have listened to all year.' -Full review at Doommantia
